Part-time Hotel Manager - Waihao Forks Hotel 2022 Ltd

About “The Forks”

The Waihao Forks Hotel is home to “Ted’s Bottle”, the unlikely war memorial to local soldier Ted d’Auvergne who, when he headed for the battlefields of Europe in December 1940, left a bottle of beer at the hotel, telling the publican: “We’ll drink it when I get back.”

However, d’Auvergne didn’t return. He was killed in action on June 2, 1941, and buried at the Suda Bay War Cemetery on the island of Crete.

The bottle now has its own display case in the bar and is surrounded by poppies. It is the centrepiece of Anzac Day commemorations in the Waihao area.
