Cropping Farm Assistant/2IC

Rathgen Farms is a vertically and horizontally integrated, family run business. Our operation involves dairying, large scale cropping, seed dressing and stock breeding and trading. We take pride in all areas of our business and love producing a quality product. We are based 20 minutes south of Timaru.

The successful candidate would help to manage planting, growing and harvesting a variety of . The role involves input into planning and managing the crop rotations and farm operations by evaluating the farming activities, Irrigation requirements and planning production and harvest to suit the current environment. The role requires experience in and an understanding of growing systems, machinery, irrigation and people.

Rathgen Farms has a wide variety of tractors, trucks, tractors, earth moving equipment and implements. Some gear is brand new and some is older. The successful candidate will be comfortable on new and old gear and will be able to use related GPS, and other technology.

The following are some of the tasks included in the role;

  • Be an active part of the team and take on a leadership role when required.

  • Act in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Operate under pressure, have strong organisational and time management skills.

  • Irrigation - move klines, check pivots and maintain equipment when necessary.

  • Harvest duties including the delivery of seed to the dressing plant, seed movements in and out of drying facilities, and help with silo maintenance.

  • General maintenance on sheds etc, and water lines when required.

  • Container loading – help with manual loads of containers as instructed.

  • Operation of the tractor and its implements in a safe and effective manner

  • Preparation and fitting of implements

  • Maintenance of the tractor/s and implements

  • Preparation of ground for sowing

  • Planting of crops

  • Control vegetation

  • Spreading fertiliser

  • Hay baling

  • Making Silage

  • Operate trucks in a safe and effective manner

  • Perform regular safety and maintenance checks

  • Clean trucks as scheduled and/or required

  • Maintain log book

  • Assist to ensure that Health and Safety policies and procedures are adhered to. Lead by example and encourage others to adhere to H&S policies
