We need an experienced Herd Manager in the Makikihi area of South Canterbury.

About the Role The farm runs Pivot irrigation, as well as K-line and rotorainers, so ideally, you're familiar with all.

Reporting to the Farm Manager/Farm Owner, you'll be responsible for the day-to-day management of the farm's 730-cow crossbred herd that milks through a 50 ASHB cowshed. 

You'll supervise and carry out milking and teat spraying, ensuring it's efficient and stress-free for people and animals. Moving and handling animals acceptably at all times, you'll assist with all aspects of stock management.

Other duties may include: feeding out, setting up break fences, assisting with pasture renovation, and cleaning and maintaining the farm dairy, plant, equipment, yards and bail area.  

  • Collect and record accurate information

  • Allocate pasture and feed budgets

  • Supervise and carry out milking and teat spraying

  • Clean and maintain equipment and yards

  • Identify and treat common animal health problems

About You You're knowledgeable about effluent and nutrient management systems and can identify and fix common problems. You understand seasonal pasture management and feed budgets and have a positive attitude towards health and safety.

A good herd manager understands good practice stock management and is competent in identifying animal health and welfare issues.

Having a healthy team culture is really important to our client, so you must be friendly, hard-working, and willing to do what needs to be done. Strong English skills are a must; both verbal and written for record keeping.

  • NZ full driver's license essential

  • Strong written and verbal English

  • Able to work well with minimal supervision

  • 3+ years of dairy farming experience
